Guitar Lake was a phenomenal place to camp under the stars and moon on the way to Mount Whitney! We had a great time camping and watching the climbers go up the mountain and come down from the summit on the way to Mount Whitney. The area is very exposed so setting up in the heat of day can be rough. The wind can be rough but is largely covered by the bowl that you are sitting in. The lake is awesome and can offer wonderful reflections and there are marmots running around everywhere up there! This is one of my favorite experiences in hiking Mount Whitney and I would love to come here again to camp in the future!

Great basecamp for Whitney from the west side. Can be very exposed during hot and sunny afternoons.

This lake is stunning. Nestled way up in the Sierra's just below Mt. Whitney. Perfect place for a sunset and a perfect staging location to summit Whitney. If you need time to acclimate this is your best bet - spend a day or two hiking here, stay the night, and knock out the Summit the next morning and you should be fine. Just watch out for the marmots... A gang of them will tear open your pack/tent and steal your nuts if you're not careful.

Coming up from Crabtree Meadows in the morning of July 2, 2018, we filtered some water at Whitney Creek just to the north of Guitar Lake. We went up on the switchbacks and on to Mt.Whitney. We took a bunch photos. Very nice views. Won't hesitate to go back there again and again. Didn't know there's a ranger station to the NE of the lake though.

Base camped twice before summiting Mt Whitney Total cool place... Altitude sickness can be a problem for flat landers. Ranger Station just NE of lake
